A student engineering team building the fastest miniature Formula 1 car we can design, simulate and machine.
STEM Racing, formerly F1 in Schools, asks school teams to do what a Formula 1 team does. We design a miniature F1 car in CAD, run it through CFD simulation until the drag stops falling, then machine and finish it. On race day it covers 20 metres of track in just over a second, fired down the line by a single CO₂ cartridge.
The car is only half of it. We also run ICARION as a business: a brand, a pit display, a sponsorship programme, a budget we have to account for and a portfolio judged as closely as the lap time. Six of us hold the roles a real team would: engineering, manufacturing, design and sponsorship. We answer to the same deadlines.
The car starts in CAD, drawn inside a rulebook that dictates the dimensions, tolerances and materials allowed.
Each revision runs through CFD. We keep the geometry that lowers drag and throw away the geometry that only looks fast.
The body is machined on a CNC router, then filled, sanded and finished by hand until the surface is clean.
Two timed runs down the track, with the portfolio, pit display and verbal presentation judged alongside them.

We raise our own budget, manage suppliers and report to partners. The commercial side is scored as heavily as the car, and we treat it that way.
Team Leader
Holds the schedule, the budget and the deadlines, and handles the partners who make the season possible.
Manufacturing Engineer
Takes the model from CAD to the CNC router and sees the car through manufacture.
Graphic Designer
Drew the winged mark, the livery and the pit display, and keeps every partner logo where it was promised.
Simulation Engineer
Runs the fast CFD passes, turning each revision into flow visuals the team can read the same day.
Finance Manager
Tracks the budget, the invoices and the cost of every part, so the team knows what it can afford before it commits.
Design Engineer
Designs the car in CAD and runs the stress testing behind every revision.
Our first competition. We took Regional Champions, Fastest Car and the Sponsorship Award, and qualified for the National Finals.

We step up from Development Class to Professional Class: a tighter rulebook, a higher standard of engineering and a full portfolio to answer for. How far we get depends on the partners we bring with us.
